New Balance 990v4 MiUSA Joe Freshgoods 1998 Intro
The New Balance 990v4 MiUSA Joe Freshgoods “1998 Intro” is a storytelling-driven collaboration between New Balance and Chicago creative director Joe Freshgoods, released as part of the “1998 Pack” in 2023.
Built on the premium 990v4 Made in USA silhouette, the shoe combines heritage running design with a nostalgic cultural theme inspired by late-90s hip-hop and visual storytelling—specifically referencing the era of Belly and iconic magazine imagery from that time. The result is a sneaker that feels more like a curated memory than a standard release.
The upper features a black ballistic mesh base layered with soft, off-white and sandy suede overlays, creating a muted but textured contrast that reflects the moody aesthetic of the late ’90s inspiration. A bold black leather “N” logo anchors the side panel, while subtle hits like “1998” branding on the heel and dual “JFG” detailing reinforce the narrative identity of the pair.
Comfort and performance remain central thanks to the ENCAP midsole, which blends lightweight foam cushioning with a durable polyurethane rim for stability and support. Despite its lifestyle storytelling, the shoe retains the durability and structure that the 990 series is known for.
Released in extremely limited quantities, the “Intro” colorway is part of a two-shoe concept (Intro/Outro) that explores contrast and storytelling through color and material. Today, it stands as one of Joe Freshgoods’ most refined New Balance collaborations—subtle in color, but heavy in cultural context and meaning.
